WHO Adopts Noma as 'Public Health Priority'

WHOThe World Health Organisation has adopted Cancrum Oris (Noma), an infection said to be promoted by extreme poverty and malnutrition as a "high public health priority."  The adoption was taken at a recent WHO meeting in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. 
 
The Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, represented by the Director of Family Health in the ministry, Dr. Adebimpe Adebiyi, stated this in Abuja, while delivering a paper titled, 'Community participation as a primary intervention strategy in the control of Cancrum Oris (Noma)', at a maiden conference on the disease. 

Governor Mallam Nasiru El RufaiThe National Orientation Agency (NOA) is working with United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to raise awareness in 1, 300 hard-to-reach communities in Kaduna State, on preventable diseases.

Malam Lawal Danrokal, a Deputy Director of the agency in the state, made this known in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kaduna.

The Association of Resident Doctors of Nigeria (NARD) has warned that it cannot guarantee industrial harmony in the health sector if the current situation which the association highlighted arent remedied. The association held its Annual General Meeting (AGM)/ Annual Scientific Conference with the theme 'A restructured residency training program in a harmonious healthcare industry - A panacea for improved helath care delivery in Nigeria' at the City Park Hotels, Enugu from the 5th to 10th September 2016. 
Isaac Adewole 1In a bid to tackle the daunting challenges be-devilling the Nigeria’s health sector, the Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole has inaugurated eHealth Steering Committee in Abuja. This is to address some of the challenges ranging from data collection and management, human resource and issue of universal health coverage.
 
Speaking at the occasion, the Minister said that the government was intervening to address these multipronged challenges through various approaches despite limited resources adding that Information and Communication Technology has the potential to help mitigate some of these challenges when appropriately applied.

Chris NgigeChris Ngige will join Isaac Adewole and Dr. o Ehanire in resolving and finding a permanent solution to the crisis rocking the health sector. The Minister of Labour and Employment, Sen. Chris Ngige, will lead the committee set up by the Federal Government to help resolve crisis in the health sector.

This is contained in a statement issued in Abuja on Wednesday, September 14, 2016. Other members of the the Federal Government negotiating team, included Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole and Minister of State for Health, Dr O. Ehanire.

Doctors plan to reduce medical tourism by 50%

DoctorThe Guild of Medical Directors in Nigeria has said it would cut over $500 billion estimated to be spent by Nigerians on medical treatment abroad by a half to help save the nation’s economy and health care services from crisis.

National President of the guild, Dr Tony Philips, stated this in Abuja recently when the organization signed a memorandum of understanding on instalment payments for the purchase of health equipment with Siemens Biostadt.

diabetes 300x199Bauchi chapter of the Diabetes Association of Nigeria (DAN) has introduced a 50 per cent subsidy on drugs purchased by diabetic patients at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) Teaching Hospital, Bauchi.

Secretary of the association in the state, Mrs Uwa Abubakar, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Bauchi on Thursday that the measure was aimed at making the drugs affordable to the over 3000 registered members of the association in the state.

PolioThe Kaduna State Government has asked parents to allow their children below the ages of five to be immunised against Polio or face prosecution.
 
The state government said in a statement by the Special Assistant to Governor Nasir El-Rufai on Media and Publicity, Mr. Samuel Aruwan, on Thursday in Kaduna that the immunisation was compulsory.
unicefThe United Nation Children’s Fund (UNICEF) estimates that every single day, Nigeria loses about 2,300 under-fives and 145 women of child-bearing age, making Nigeria the second largest contributor to the under-five deaths and maternal mortality rate in the world. Also, UNICEF’s estimate showed that Nigeria has been adversely affected by Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) with the number of malnourished children put at 2,539,704.
 
To this end, Paul Mudzongo, Nutrition Specialist, UNICEF Nigeria, Sokoto Field Office, said what was needed to tackle malnutrition is “breastfeeding” exclusively for six months and adding complementary feeding while continuing with breastfeeding for the next two years.

Researchers suggest it is possible to produce offspring without a female egg.
