Alas! Lassa Fever sneaks back into Nigeria

lasaThe respite is over. Lassa fever season is back, and it’s brought Anambra and Delta closer over the River Niger bridge. New cases popping up in Asaba have led to the death of a doctor and two others.

The doctor was transferred from El Comfort Clinic in Asaba to Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital in Nnewi where he died hours later. His wife was ill and moved to Otibhokhae Teaching Hospital in Edo state, but her fever was confirmed as just malaria. According to Dr Nicholas Azinge, commissioner for health in Delta. She’s been treated for malaria, but her children are under surveillance.

Sokoto To Administer Malaria Drugs To 1.8m Kids

sokoto 300x200In a bid to mitigate the effect of malaria infection across Sokoto state, Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal has flagged off the house-to-house campaign for the administration of preventive drugs which targets estimated 1.8 million kids.

Speaking in Isa LGA of the state during the flag off, Tambuwal said “government has adopted many strategies in solving the menace of malaria and other health related diseases such as capacity building for the health personnel, provision of health care facilities and provision of essential drugs among others.”

According to the nurses, their national executives have squashed the constitution of the Association and have currently adopted for themselves powers that are not provided by the constitution of the Association.

WHO on Humanitarian Crisis in Nigeria

A WHO report says it is scaling up its emergency response activities, together with partners, to assist hundreds of thousands of people in desperate need of health services.

download 14In its quest to provide affordable healthcare to all Nigerians, the National Assembly has revealed plans to rescue the National Health Insurance Scheme alongside other agencies requiring emergency situations from the strongholds of the Treasury Single Account (TSA) system of the Federal Government.

The revelation was made during a three-day NHIS management retreat in Kaduna state by the Deputy Chairman of the House of representatives committee on health, Muhammad Usman who represented the chairman, Hon. Chike Okafor.

UNICEFThe Nutrition Specialist, United Nations Children’s Fund, Mrs. Ada Ezeogu, has said that more Nigerian children may grow up to become adults with low mental capacity because of malnutrition.
 
Ezeogu stated this on the sidelines of a media dialogue on how to stop child malnutrition in the country.
