NHIS logoPresident Muhammadu Buhari has approved the removal of Chief Executives of five major parastatals in the nation’s health sector.

They include the Director-General of Nigerian Centre for Disease Control, Prof. Abdulsalami Nasidi; Director-General of National Agency for the Control of Aids, Prof. John Idoko; and Chief Executive of Nigerian Institute for Medical Research, Prof. Innocent Ujah.

The call was made by doctors under the aegis of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA).

A statement by the Deputy Director (Press) of the ministry, Samuel Olowookere, said that the minister, represented by the Director, Occupational Safety and Health Department, Mrs. Nofisat Arogundade, explained that the profile would provide insight into the systematic strengthening of the national OSH system.

The session brought together a variety of international development agencies, academia and medical professionals who brainstormed along with officials of the Federal Ministry of Health and SNEPCo on the possible areas of support and collaboration. Unfolding the Federal Government’s vision for the health sector, Prof Adewole said the support of the private sector was key towards ensuring the delivery of affordable healthcare to the people.  
unicefAn increase in number of children breastfed in Nigeria could save lives of more than 820,000 children under the age of five, the United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) has declared.
 
In the same report by UNICEF on “Progress of Breastfeeding in Nigeria” made available to newsmen by its Communication Officer (Advocacy, Media and External Relations), Mrs. Ijeoma Onuoha-Ogwe, it was revealed that: “More breastfeeding could prevent the death of 20,000 women a year from breast cancer…lead to improvement in birth spacing, reduction in women’s risk of diabetes and may reduce rates of ovarian cancer.”

 The Health Leadership Academy (HLA), Private Sector Health Alliance of Nigeria (PHN) and other partners have developed a fellowship programme - the Leadership Enhancement and Accountability for the Public Sector (LEAPS) - to train states’ policy makers and implementers at the state levels to enhance their managerial capabilities. The first batch from seven states was trained in Abuja.

Resident Doctors Suspend Strike In Kano

health workersThe National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), has suspended her strike due , what the association termed the sincere and unrelenting nature of President Muhammad in Buhari, Speaker House of Representative, Yakubu Dogara in finding lasting solutions to the issues bedevilling the sector.

This position was presented during a media paryley held at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH), the President NARD, Kano chapter, Dr. Muhammad Adamu Askira said that though the Residency Training Program committee has started sitting, the final report is yet to be released.

Curbing Medical Tourism in Nigeria

Mr. Nazeeph Mohammed wanted an emergency abortion to save his wife, Hadiza’s life having experienced two stillbirths in quick succession. “My wife lost two children due to high blood pressure which has been a challenge for her since we got married,” he says.
EnuguThe Federal Government has raised hopes for the implementation of the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund. To accomplish this, the Ministry of Health has announced that it has drawn up a set of guidelines with specific reference to the National Health Act of 2014, alignment with national health policy and following wide-ranging consultations with the relevant stakeholders in the Nigerian healthcare sector.
 
Minister of Health, Prof Isaac Adewole, made this announcement when he spoke at a Town Hall meeting in Enugu.
