eventNigeria suffers economic loss yearly due to  medical tourism. It also causes loss of lives as some Nigerians travel to some countries without proper information about the doctors qualifications and experience and  the hospitals in where they practice.
 
It is no gain saying that it is a scourge that needs to be reversed urgently especially since some medical experts and hospitals in the country can handle some of these ailments.
baby2The World Health Organisation (WHO) has developed an electronic solution using hospital-based study on 10,000 pregnant women in Nigeria and Uganda to reduce the high labour-related child and maternal death rate in sub-Saharan Africa.
 
The software, an electronic health solution, tagged Simplified, Effective, Labour Monitoring-to-Action (SELMA) tool, would be built into mobile phones, tablets and other mobile devices. It promises to enhance the capacity of less skilled persons working in rural areas but does not replace the expertise of a specialist.

Scientists find HIV-AIDs full cure

HIV 300x225A British man with HIV undergoing a pioneering treatment to cure him of the disease has shown “remarkable” progress, doctors have told a newspaper.

Scientists treating the 44-year-old patient are now hopeful of a breakthrough in what has been described as “one of the first serious attempts at a full cure for HIV”.

Isaac AdewoleMinister of health Prof. Isaac Adewale on Wednesday warned Medical Laboratory Scientists and other health professionals not to harbor unregistered practitioners and other quacks among them.
 
Adewale who was speaking at the 52nd Annual Scientific Conference of the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria in Jalingo said the presence of quackery and professional malpractice mainly harbored by some unscrupulous individuals and unregistered laboratories was a source of worry to the ministry.

HealthcareThe United Nations Population Fund says Nigeria requires about $16m annually to boost reproductive health services.
 
The Executive Director of UNFPA, Prof. Babatunde Osotimehin, in a statement by the Deputy Regional Director, West and Central Africa Region, Ms. Beatrice Mutali, said that “Nigeria requires between US $12 million and US $16 million for the commodities it requires to go round the country annually”.

The state Commissioner for Health, Dr Kabiru Getso, disclosed this on Thursday when he laid the foundation stone for the upgrading of Getso Primary Health Care Centre at Getso town.

Prof Temitope AlongeChief Medical Officer of the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, Prof. Temitope Alonge, has said that provision of drugs at cheaper and affordable prices for the poor masses of the nation was possible for Nigeria if she could approach the World Health Organisation (WHO) for permission to produce vaccines and tablets.
 
Speaking in Ibadan Sunday, Alonge said Nigerians were always at the receiving end of bad government policy, and that the country would do a lot of favour to those who are in need of special drugs for treatment of complex ailment if the Nigerian government did what India did instead of importing drugs into the country.
