UNICEFF BigThe United Nations Children Funds (UNICEF) says it will distribute 358,134 insecticides treated nets in four local government areas of Borno for malaria prevention and control.

UNICEF’s Communication Specialist, Kusali Kubwalo, said in a statement in Maiduguri that the nets would be distributed to children under the age of five, expectant and breastfeeding mothers. According to Kubwalo, “The exercise will be conducted in collaboration between the UNICEF, Borno State Primary Health Care Development Agency (SPHCDA) and the State Ministry of Health.

Isaac Adewole 696x445The Hon. Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole has charged State Governments to review their population policy and implementation approaches with a view to encouraging families to see the need for moderate family size.
 
The Minister gave this charge while speaking at the inaugural Annual Memorial Lecture on Prof. Babatunde Osotimehin, held in Abuja recently. According to him ‘’Nigeria needs to invest about $652 million over the next five years on high-impact family planning’’

Election Irregularities Tear Abia NMA Apart

nmaThe Abia state Chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has been thrown into turmoil following the disputed election. The election, which took place during the 2018 Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the association, produced two claimants to the Chairmanship position.
 
The two claimants are Dr (Mrs) Carol Iwuoha and Dr Udo Mark both staff of the Abia State University Teaching Hospital Aba. The immediate past Chairman Dr Prince Onyemachi, however, handed over to Dr Iwuoha who he described as duly elected in accordance with the NMA rules and guidelines.

NDLEAThe National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has called on the Plateau Government to establish a rehabilitation centre for drugs addicts in the state.
 
Mr Ibrahim Braji, the state NDLEA Commander, made the appeal during an interview with Newsmen on Monday in Jos. Braji  said there was an urgent need for the government to establish a rehabilitation centre or expand the already existing NDLEA mini rehabilitation and counselling centre to full capacity. 

Dr. Hala Daggash Experts have charged healthcare providers in the public and private health facilities on improved Patient-Centred Care (PCC) to increase Nigeria’s health indices. They gave the submission at the Healthcare Leadership Academy (HLA) Patient-Centered Care (PCC) training programme, designed for front-line clinicians across all cadres and disciplines (including, but not limited to, doctors, nurses, midwives, dentists, optometrists, physiotherapists and pharmacists), which according to the Executive Director, Dr. Hala Daggash is aimed at equipping them with the knowledge and tools required to provide improved patient-centered care and offer optimal healthcare services.

who 891x470The World Health Organisation (WHO) Coordinator in Cross River, Dr Thompson Igbu, says Nigeria would be polio-free by August 2018. Dr Igbu made this known to the Newsmen on the sidelines of a workshop on integrated disease surveillance and response on Wednesday in Calabar. “Nigeria would have been 24 months free of indigenous poliovirus in the country if no case was reported. 
 
“Nigeria is doing very well in the fight against poliomyelitis in the country,” he said. The expert noted that polio reporting system was very strong in Nigeria and the last polio case that was recorded in the country was in August 2016. According to him, WHO had trained community personnel that quickly report any condition that looked like polio or any of the diseases on Federal Government watch list to the appropriate bodies. 
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control NAFDACThe National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, (NAFDAC) has urged the National Assembly to speed-up the amendment of laws to address the dangerous trend of counterfeiting and destruction of innocent lives.
 
The Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Moji Adeyeye who made the call during the destruction of N3.5billion worth of seized drugs and other illegally imported products described as the largest seizures in recent times, said the law would enable the government to prescribe stiffer penalty for peddlers of the banned drugs, adding that the regulatory agency will not relent in exposing cartel that specializes in the importation of unwholesome products.
