Screen Shot 2020 10 06 at 11.03.00 PMA new study says Anambra, Osun, Ogun, Lagos, and Rivers states have the most efficient healthcare services in Nigeria. The study also rates Sokoto, Kebbi, Yobe, Bauchi and Niger states as the least performing states in healthcare services.

The study, published by a health technology company in Nigeria — the WellNewMe —added that the coronavirus global pandemic had brought to the fore the importance of having a strong health system, as many countries were faced with a unique challenge on how to best handle a novel disease that kills people around the world at a rapid rate.

To rank the most efficient states for healthcare in Nigeria, the researcher used a modified version of the model used by New York-based Common Wealth Fund, a private foundation that aims to promote a high performing healthcare system that achieves better access, improved quality, and greater efficiency, particularly for society’s most vulnerable, including low-income people, the uninsured, young children, and elderly adults.

“We used 27 indicators that measured performance in four domains important to policymakers, providers, patients, and the public: care process, access, equity, and healthcare outcomes.

“Our data came from a variety of sources, including the National Bureau of Statistics, the Demographic and Health Surveys Programme, the World Health Organisation, Oxford Poverty & Human Development Initiative and Kingmakers.com.ng. Except where stated, most of the data was from the year 2018.

“The results showed Anambra State has the most efficient health care system in the country, closely followed by Osun, Ogun, Lagos, and Rivers states to make up the top five states.

“The top half of the list was dominated by states from the southern part of the country, with the highest-ranking state from the north, Nasarawa, coming in at the 13th spot,” the study author, Dr. Obi Igbokwe, noted.

Igbokwe, who is also the Chief Executive Officer of WellNewMe, said the ranking exposes the geographical disparity in healthcare service availability and delivery across the country.
