FG To Make HPV Immunisation Routine Programme

Prof Isaac Adewole1 e1448650928487 510x374 620x330The federal government is making effort to include Human Papilloma V‎irus (HPV) immunisation as part of the routine immunisation programme. 

The vaccine which is available in health service outlets in Nigeria in both private and public hospitals is expected to be given to girls for cervical cancer prevention. 

This was revealed by the minister of health, Prof Isaac Adewole during the commemoration of the World Cancer Day in Abuja and with the theme “We Can, I Can.

”The minister who noted that an estimated 60% of cancer-related ailments occur in females and are predominantly breast and cervical cancers, ‎said the national strategic plan for cervical cancer control is currently being revised. “Human Papilloma Virus immunisation of girls for cervical cancer prevention was introduced into Nigeria by government as an additional means of cervical cancer control and prevention. Subsequently, HPV vaccination has been available in health service outlets in Nigera in both public and private hospitals. Government is making effort to include it as part of the routine immunisation programme.”

 “Arising from an observed wide public acceptance of the vaccine, arrangements are underway to commence a pilot of GAVY‎-supported demonstration on HPV vaccination in some selected states in Nigeria.” In the same vein, a national policy guideline on prevention, control and management of Hepatitis in Nigeria has been developed with a view to address the rising incidence of the disease.  Adewole stated that “The policy is also targeted at the prevention and control of liver-cancer associated Hepatitis.
