They also faulted the directive by the Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC) pegging a doctorate as minimum qualification for lecturing by medical trainers in the nation’s universities by 2021. NMA, in a statement by its president and secretary general, Mike O. Ogirima and Yusuf Tanko Sununu, accused the commission of usurpation of duties of the MDCN and the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN), the two statutory bodies set up to regulate health professionals in the country.
The doctors contended that the NPMCN Act gave the college the right to award fellowships, diplomas and degrees recognisable for appointment as trainers and specialists. According to the NMA, the products of the college had been doing well in that regard, urging the NUC to act within extant laws by immediately withdrawing the circular, as it would challenge the content through all available legal means.
