NgigeThe Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, has inaugurated the national tripartite technical committee, which will develop the first National Occupational Safety and Health Profile in Nigeria.

A statement by the Deputy Director (Press) of the ministry, Samuel Olowookere, said that the minister, represented by the Director, Occupational Safety and Health Department, Mrs. Nofisat Arogundade, explained that the profile would provide insight into the systematic strengthening of the national OSH system.

According to him, the profile will assist in the logical review of the progress and impact of the national OSH management in Nigeria. He explained, “The development of Occupational Safety and Health profile is a significant step towards sustainable Occupational Safety and Health management in Nigeria; this giant stride marks the beginning of our nation`s efforts towards the development of the first National Occupational Safety and Health Profile to benchmark Safety and Health Management system in Nigeria.

Ngige said, “Occupational Safety and Health is a critical component of decent work country programme which does not only impact on labour protection but equally has overbearing influence on productivity in the national economy.” While appreciating the support of the International Labour Organisation, Ngige stated that the development of Occupational Safety and Health profile was guided by ILO Convention C.187 and Recommendation R.197.

He expressed his determination to create an OSH profile that would be at par with global best standards.
