On the dearth of doctors

dearthPresident of the Nigeria Medical Association [NMA] Dr Francis Faduyile recently raised alarm over shortage of healthcare practitioners in the country. He said only 42,000 doctors are available for Nigeria’s 200 million people.

He listed insecurity, unemployment, low remuneration, bad roads, poor job satisfaction and poor healthcare system as some of the reasons why Nigerian doctors and other healthcare practitioners are leaving the country for greener pastures abroad.

160 patienceThe Chief Medical Director, Federal Teaching Hospital, Ido Ekiti, Professor Adekunle Ajayi, said on Sunday that the hospital performed free surgical operations for 160 patients as part of the hospital’s end of the year activities.

Ajayi said the beneficiaries included 100 cataract patients and 60 others with lumps and glaucoma, stressing that the medical facility would in 2020 consolidate on its gains in 2019 through value addition. “We conducted cataract operations for 100 patients, meaning that by the grace of God, we were able to restore vision to 100 potentially blind members of society free of charge.

The coming event holding at 7:00 am at OAUTHC premises will mark the 16th edition of the programme which has seen Omisore showing his consistent yearly generosity to the needy in Osun State. Apart from show of love to patients at OAUTHC, Omisore is also to pay a similar visit to children orphanage and welfare centre in the state, where he will also pay their bills and present the children with gift items.

teethDr Charles Ononiwu, associate Professor and Chief Consultant Maxillofacial surgeon, says poor oral hygiene can lead to cancer in oral or facial region of the body. Ononiwu, who is the head, Department of Maxillofacial Surgery at the National Hospital, said this in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

Oral and maxillofacial surgery specializes in surgery of the face, mouth, and jaws; it is an internationally recognized surgical specialty. He said that cancer formation was something that grows gradually and needed to be discovered on time for proper treatment. “When it comes to oral care, we know that infection generally is one of things that are responsible for cancers.

traumaThe Lagos State Government has appealed to health care providers, including public and private health facilities operating in the state, to stop rejecting gunshot victims and other trauma patients for want of a police report before commencing treatment.

The Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, in a statement released on Monday, lamented that some health facilities in the State were in the habit of rejecting or delaying care to trauma victims, which has in some cases resulted in avoidable loss of lives. Abayomi urged hospitals, health centres and clinics to offer immediate comprehensive care to gunshot victims and other trauma patients without hindrance, in line with the Federal Compulsory Treatment and Care for Victims of Gunshot Act, 2017.

preg 2The Oyo State Government, in a bid to improve health care infrastructure, has procured a Siemens Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) 1.5 Tesla for the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital in Ogbomoso.

The Managing Director of Swiss Biostadt Limited, Dr Emma Ajayi, said the new 1.5T MRI machine would facilitate health care delivery in the country, stressing that with the facilities available, LAUTECH Teaching Hospital had emerged as the leading centre for radiology and medical imaging in Nigeria. Ajayi, in a statement issued on Monday, noted that the hospital is now poised to take health care delivery in Oyo to the frontiers of internationally acceptable and reproducible health standards.
