Nigerian Medical Association NMADoctors in Kaduna state under the aegis of Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) have described as a national disaster, the declining immunization coverage in Nigeria, saying, there is urgent need for more direct community engagement on issues of routine immunization to improve community participation and ownership.

Addressing newsmen yesterday in Kaduna on the occasion of 2017 annual Physicians’ Week, the chairman of NMA, Dr. Shehu Abdulrahman stated that the 2016/2017 National Immunization Coverage Survey (NICS) indicated that only 33percent of children aged 12-23 months had three doses of pentavalent vaccine against the global target of 90 percent, only 23 percent were fully immunized while 40 percent did not receive any vaccine from the health system.

Contrary to the belief of many, a medical expert, Professor Olayiwola Shittu has said that children can also suffer urinary difficulty due to errors of development in the womb before birth. In a 2016/2017 inaugural lecture of the University of Ibadan, Professor Shittu declared that most often in boys, such a difficulty in passing urine is caused by an obstruction in bladder outlet.

Although difficulty in passing urine could occur at any age, he said this is  a problem that should not be overlooked.

tetanus vascination2The first 2017 round of Maternal Neonatal tetanus Elimination Campaign had vaccinated 124,852 women against tetanus in seven local governments in Oyo State.

Mr Steve Akinrinade of the South West zonal office of the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency, made this disclosure while giving a feedback on the first round of trismus vaccination in these local governments with a high risk of trismus.

Speaking at the investiture of new executive members of the Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria (MWAN), Oyo State in Ibadan, Dr Atalabi-Oladele stated that women occupy unique positions to influence  health bill and laws that can ensure a healthy nation.

Polio vaccine immunisationThe World Health Organisation (WHO) has recorded more than 90 per cent decrease in polio outbreak in Africa in 2012, an official, Mr Basi Wadzin, has said.
Wadzin is the State Coordinator of WHO in Plateau.

He stated this at the administration of polio vaccines to children at the Primary Health Care Centre in Jos North Local Government Area organised by Rotary Club, District 9125.

OSINBAJO 3Vice President Yemi Osinbajo yesterday lamented that Nigeria loses billions of naira to overseas medical trips annually. He spoke in Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, while commissioning the 400-bed Afe Babalola University Teaching Hospital (ABUADTH), Ado Ekiti.

Osinbajo, who was represented at the event by the Minister of Health, Prof Isaac Adewole, said the hospital, which he described as a masterpiece will help stop Nigerians from seeking medical treatments abroad and enhance healthcare delivery system in the country.

FG, WDF set up 390 diabetes clinics nationwide

Professor Isaac Folorunso Adewole1 1062x598The Federal Government said it has, in partnership with the World Diabetes Federation (WDF), established about 390 diabetes clinics in different parts of the country to address the growing problem of diabetes, which experts say, has assumed an epidemic proportion in Nigeria and several other countries in the world.

In a speech to formally declare open the maiden edition of Sanofi Diabetes Summit in Lagos, the Minister of Health Prof. Isaac Adewole also disclosed that the government now has 175 clinics in place which are providing gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) care and another 60 clinics providing Diabetes/TB care in the country.

Digital Health 1With greater accessibility to mobile technology and data, which have outpaced other forms of communications infrastructure in African, stakeholders in the health sector have been urged to harness opportunities of the disruptive and converging technology to promote access to quality healthcare for patients. According to a new report published by Jumia, Nigeria’s largest online retailer, Africa has 960 million mobile subscribers and 216 million Internet users at penetration rates of 80 percent and 18 percent, respectively, with Nigeria having 150 million mobile users.

Speaking at the Healthcare Federation of Nigeria (HFN) 2017 Digital Conference, with the theme: “Digital Health Technology Platform: Engaging Health Systems to Expand Access and Improved Quality”, the President, HFN, Clare Omatseye said, the rise of mobile technology is a new game-changer in healthcare as, it plays many role in ensuring access to quality healthcare both for patients and the professional.

That agreement was reached on Tuesday during a courtesy visit by the executives of RSTMWA to the South-South Zonal NAFDAC in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

Resident Doctors on strikeThree weeks ago, the Federal Government chose to be decisive and confrontational by speaking out on the air of arrogance and impunity flaunted by medical personnel under full government employment.

Realising how much the latter had taken advantage of their professional calling in the country to armtwist them into what it should ordinarily not agree to, the Federal Government took the bold step by ordering them to henceforth restrict their practice to the body that pays their bills or lose their jobs.
