The Dangers of Self Medication

downloadIt is important that the cause of ill health is diagnosed before the administration of medication. However, in spite of this, self medication has continued to be a widespread practice in the country.
 
In most cases, people engage in self-medication without any knowledge of their ailment or the consequence of using the drugs.

The Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Professor Usman Yusuf made the declaration, while addressing a meeting of the Standing Committee of NHIS and the Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs) in Abuja, the nation’s capital.

Reason: According to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the United Nation Children’s Fund (UNICEF), a case of polio means that at least 200 other children must have been exposed to the virus.

Pay Your Counterpart Fund, PLWH Tells FG

Isaac Adewole 1Former Coordinator, Lagos Network of People Living With HIV/AIDS, Mr. Ibrahim Umoru, has accused the Federal Government of paying lip service to the treatment and welfare of Nigerians living with the dreaded virus.
 
Umoru said, in an interview with our correspondent on Tuesday, that although the  United States and Sweden shared about 95 per cent of the cost of treating HIV patients in Nigeria, the FG had defaulted on its promise to increase its counterpart funding of HIV programmes from  five per cent to 50 per cent.

Isaac Adewole 2President Muhammadu Buhari on Saturday expressed appreciation to the government of Japan for contributing 800 million dollars to the fight against malaria, tuberculosis and other deadly diseases in Nigeria.

This is even as the President assured that Nigeria will diligently ensure full rehabilitation of victims of Boko Haram and find lasting solutions to combat threats of terrorism in the country.

Alas! Lassa Fever sneaks back into Nigeria

lasaThe respite is over. Lassa fever season is back, and it’s brought Anambra and Delta closer over the River Niger bridge. New cases popping up in Asaba have led to the death of a doctor and two others.

The doctor was transferred from El Comfort Clinic in Asaba to Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital in Nnewi where he died hours later. His wife was ill and moved to Otibhokhae Teaching Hospital in Edo state, but her fever was confirmed as just malaria. According to Dr Nicholas Azinge, commissioner for health in Delta. She’s been treated for malaria, but her children are under surveillance.

Sokoto To Administer Malaria Drugs To 1.8m Kids

sokoto 300x200In a bid to mitigate the effect of malaria infection across Sokoto state, Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal has flagged off the house-to-house campaign for the administration of preventive drugs which targets estimated 1.8 million kids.

Speaking in Isa LGA of the state during the flag off, Tambuwal said “government has adopted many strategies in solving the menace of malaria and other health related diseases such as capacity building for the health personnel, provision of health care facilities and provision of essential drugs among others.”

According to the nurses, their national executives have squashed the constitution of the Association and have currently adopted for themselves powers that are not provided by the constitution of the Association.

Lack of money threatens World Food Programme work in Niger The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has assured that the Federal Government is committed to reversing life-threatening diseases affecting Nigerian children.

Mohammed said this in Sokoto, in a message to the opening of a two-day Media Dialogue on Malnutrition, organised by UNICEF, with the theme ''Good Nutrition; invest more #StopChildmalnutritionNigeria.''
