NMA wants MDCN reconstituted

nma stethoscopeRising from a meeting of its national officers committee, the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has called for the reconstitution of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), which was disbanded by the federal government, along with other professional regulatory bodies and government parastatals.

Cancer blood test 300x168Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Health Pham Le Tuan on Tuesday said over 75,000 deaths are caused by cancer annually in Vietnam, while there are around 150,000 newly-detected cancer cases each year.

Tuan said at a seminar on approach to effective and affordable cancer treatment held in Vietnam’s capital Hanoi. Reports at the seminar showed that cancer is becoming one of top causes for death worldwide as well as in Asia and in Vietnam.

The International Council of Nurses ICNThe International Council of Nurses (ICN) took part in a consultation of the Expert Group of the United Nations Secretary-General’s High-Level Commission on Health Employment and Economic Growth (HEEG) and health professions associations held 11 April 2016 in Geneva, Switzerland.
 
 Dr Judith Shamian, President of the International Council of Nurses (ICN), who was selected to serve on the Commission, also attended the event, along with members of the Expert Group and representatives from 10 health professions associations.

HerbalThe Kaduna State Primary Health Care Development Agency, has set up a 32-member committee of traditional rulers to promote health issues in rural communities. 

The committee is chaired by Dr Bello Abdulkadir, Salanken Zazzau and District Head of Waje, Tudun Wada in Zaria. This was disclosed by Hamza Ikara, the State Health Education Officer at a two day training for members of the committee, adding that the effort would promote and strengthen utilisation of health services at the grassroots.

In Abuja 38 people die of strange disease

zika virusThe residents of a slum settlement in the Abuja Municipal Area Council, Saburi 1, claim that 38 people died suddenly after complaining of headache and fever. 

The Daily Sun also reports that a 14 year old girl, Mariam Mustapha died at the weekend after complaining of the same symptoms.

Amina MohammedThe Minister of Environment, Amina Mohammed, has called for more research, transparency and openness, as Nigeria ventures into commercial biotechnology. 
 
Amina, who answered journalists’ questions on concerns raised by anti-GMOs on Nigeria’s venture into biotechnology, yesterday noted that the National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA) had government backing to police the technology in Nigeria.

The Public Relations Officer of NARD, Dr Eugene Uhuaba, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), in Lagos, on Tuesday, that the association’s demands had not been met.
