drugs makingittv1A new research conducted by Doctors Without Borders and two pharmaceutical companies, using two new anti-tuberculosis drugs known as bedaquiline and delamanid, has shown 75 to 97 per cent cure rates in affected patients. 
 
A statement issued by Medecins Sans Frontiers in Geneva on Wednesday, as part of the activities to mark the World Tuberculosis Day, indicates that the combination of the drugs has proved to be more effective than other medications in the management of  the disease.
imagesThe Association of Public Health Physicians of Nigeria (APHPN) has said that the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) would not be achieved without a universal health coverage.  
 
It said the whole concept of universal health coverage was to providing health services to people where they work and live, without discrimination.  APHPN Chairman, Abuja Chapter, Dr. Terfa Kene, disclosed this at the 32nd annual general meeting of the association. 
 
According to him, "we had a lot of improvement in Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), even though we didn't achieve our targets, there were significant improvement;

UNICEF LOGOIt is feared that Nigeria stands to loose a total number of 300,000 children within the ages of 0-5 years to acute malnutrition in 2016 if drastic measures are not swiftly put in place to tackle the menace. 

Zakari Fusheni, a nutrition specialist in UNICEF Abuja office, on Wednesday disclosed this at a retreat on malnutrition with the theme:

“Malnutrition: the major cause of under five-5 mobility and mortality in Kaduna state: call for action” which was organised by the Kaduna state ministry of local government, health and human services, in collaboration with UNICEF Kaduna field office, also disclosed that over 1.6 million Nigerian children are malnourished.

240316N.Isaac Adewole 696x522The federal government on Thursday said that there is a distressing rise in cases of undetected and undiagnosed tuberculosis in Nigeria, saying that this development puts a lot of Nigerians at the risk of the disease. 

The government said this just as Star Deepwater Petroleum Limited and its venture partners in the Agbami field project reiterated their commitment to partnering with it and state governments to tackle the scourge of tuberculosis and other health issues in the country.

Osagie EhanireMinister of State for Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire, has said the present administration is committed towards forging a closer relationship with medical social workers in the country. He stated this when the national president of the Association of Medical Social Workers of Nigeria (AMSWON), Abubakar Alhassan Bichi led a delegation to his office in Abuja.
He said partnership with the association will lead to improved healthcare delivery services across the country Ehanire said the government’s major focus is to ensure that the ordinary Nigerian is at the heart of its policies, adding that medical social workers will be playing vital roles in that direction.

HIV AidsThe National Agency for the Control of Aids (NACA) today, unveiled a simplified version of the HIV/AIDs Anti-Discrimination Act 2014 to aid better understanding and maximum utilization of the provisions. 

NACA's DG, Prof John Udoko who did the unveiling in Abuja said the law needed to be broken down into everyday language devoid of legal terminologies so that people can understand it. 

He said "Nigeria is one of the few countries in the world with an anti-discrimination law related to HIV/AIDs. Making a popular version of this law available will result in increased demand for testing services and improved quality of life for people living with HIV in Nigeria."

sick child e1459291577741The World Tuberculosis Day was marked worldwide on Thursday March 24, the 134th anniversary of Dr. Robert Koch’s discovery of mycobacterium tuberculosis, with a call by the World Health Organisation (WHO) for new commitments and new action in the global fight against tuberculosis – one of the world’s top infectious killers.

However, while WHO seems happy that there has been tremendous progress in recent years as the world is on track to meet the Millennium Development Goal of reversing the spread of TB by 2015 the story in Nigeria was not so impressive.

Lagos moves against sickle cell disorder

lagosThe Lagos State Government says it is finalising policy on treatment guideline for people living with Sickle Cell Disorder, even as the disorder has been declared as a major public health issue.

Commissioner for Health, Dr. Jide Idris, who made the disclosure at a seminar organized by National Sickle Cell center in collaboration with Sickle Cell Non Governmental Organisations, stakeholders and those living with the disorder in Lagos, said the disorder had become an emergent health concern, given the data of 300, 000 to 500, 000 children born with it yearly in Africa.

Nigerian Stock Exchange NSEThe Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE), in collaboration with the Committee Encouraging Corporate Philanthropy in Nigeria (CECP), has concluded plan to acquire Mobile Cancer Centre (MCC) in the country. 
 
The NSE said it had successfully generated the sum of N36.5 million in its 2015 corporate challenge programme, which would be deployed for the acquisition of the MCC in the fight against cancer.

DogaraSpeaker of the House of Representatives Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara has sponsored the treatment of about 5, 000 patients who suffer from various ailments from 20 local government areas of Bauchi state. 

The free medical services which commenced yesterday at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital [ATBUTH], Bauchi will be rendered by a team of professional doctors known as ‘Doctors on the move Africa’ and would last for two weeks.
