Professor of pharmacology at the University of Maiduguri, Borno State, Isa Hussaini, has said that poor funding on the part of government is frustrating research efforts on cancer and other diseases in Nigeria.
 
Hussaini, who is known for his work on the use of local herbs in cancer therapy, said many of the research grants made available to scientists in the country were provided by international agencies.

Nigeria To Host WHO Africa Regional Director

moetiThe WHO Regional Director for Africa, Dr. Matshidiso Rebecca Moeti will pay an official visit to Nigeria from 12th – 14th October, 2017. Dr. Moeti will be in Nigeria to support the Federal Government’s   Response to the Humanitarian Emergencies in Nigeria and the North East in particular.
 
Her visit is not only expected to strengthen support of the WHO to Nigeria in her fight against humanitarian emergencies but also to advocate for the effective implementation of the “Transformation Agenda” of the Regional Director.

Promise Fulfilled: Minister Commissions PHC

minna newThe Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole has commissioned the Primary Healthcare Centre he promised to renovate at Fuka village, Munye Local Government Area of Niger State. Speaking at the ceremony, on Tuesday, 10th October, 2017, the Minister said that it was in fulfillment of his promise that the hospital was renovated and put to use.
 
Adewale said “The Commissioner of Health brought me here when we were bothered about Lassa fever outbreak last year, we came here we saw the old clinic that was abandoned and I made a pledge to renovate it as a signed of commitment to care for our people”.

Primary health care centreNigeria needs to spend about N712 billion annually to bridge its healthcare financing deficit, a civic technology organization, BudgIT Nigeria says.

BudgIT’s Lead Partner, Oluseun Onigbinde, who made the observation on Thursday, called on the federal government to strengthen primary health care centres to be able to tackle epidemics in the country.

University of Ilorin Teaching HospitalThe Nigerian government on Wednesday commenced moves for a major review of the health sector including whether or not doctors in public hospitals should engage in private practice. Several Nigerians have alleged that doctors in public hospitals refer their patients to their own private clinics for treatment in order to make more money.

The Minister of Health, Isaac Adewole, while briefing journalists in Abuja after the Federal Executive Council meeting on Wednesday, said the Council has set up a committee to review the laws guiding medical practice and how it conflicts with the Nigerian code of conduct for public officials.

The Nigerian SenateThe Nigerian Senate has proposed ways to curb the spread of Monkeypox, which outbreak was first reported on Tuesday last week in Bayelsa State. The disease has since been reported in at least seven other states in Nigeria.

The Senate while debating a motion sponsored by Ali Wakili, (APC-Bauchi), urged the Federal Government and other stakeholders to be pro-active in preventing the disease from becoming an epidemic.

Nigeria hails major step towards polio free AfricaThe World Health Organisation (WHO) on Saturday renewed its commitment to assist Nigeria combat polio and other child killer diseases. Mrs Masthidisco Moeti, the WHO Regional Director for Africa, said this at a press conference in Maiduguri.

Moeti said that the organisation would work in collaboration with development partners to rehabilitate and upgrade health facilities ravaged by Boko Haram insurgents in the 27 local government areas of the state.

vaccine 1The Kwara Government said on Monday that no fewer than 200,000 people have been vaccinated within three days of the ongoing yellow fever reactive vaccination in the state. Dr Sulaiman Alege, the Commissioner for Health, who gave the figure to newsmen in Ilorin, said 960,000 doses of the vaccine would be administered in nine communities in the state.

“The vaccination is taking place in Ifelodun Local Government and eight others, comprising Isin, Ilorin South, Ilorin East, Irepodun, Oke-Ero and others.

eye testEye care practitioners under the umbrella of Nigerian Optometrists Association (NOA), Ogun State Chapter, yesterday stormed the streets of Abeokuta with its awareness road walk to mark this year’s World Sight Day.

The awareness trek, which began from the Kuto Cultural Centre, took the group across MKO Abiola Stadium and Southwest Resource Centre, Oke Masan and back to Kuto Cultural Centre.
