drinking too muchA medical practitioner, Dr. Chinonso Egemba, says drinking a lot of alcohol within a short period can lead to sudden heart failure and death. Dr. Egemba, who is popularly known as ‘Aproko Doctor’ noted that the liver can only process about one unit of alcohol per hour. The physician stated that a can of beer contains about two units of alcohol.

The doctor was reacting to a viral video of a man who reportedly died after gulping a bottle of spirit alcohol in a competition, via his Instagram handle @aproko_doctor.  He said, “This man drank a whole bottle of spirit for a bet and died shortly after. Drinking a lot of alcohol within a short period is very risky and could kill you. “Your liver can only process roughly one unit of alcohol per hour, a can of beer is roughly two units. Don’t try this at all.”

According to him, a small 25ml shot of spirit is roughly one unit, adding that a small glass of wine is roughly over one unit.

“There’s nothing you can do to speed up the rate at which your liver breaks down alcohol. When the liver can’t process it properly, it ‘overflows’ and start to enter other organs.

“It can enter your brain and shut down your breathing, it can drop your blood sugar to dangerous levels, cause sudden heart failure, etc.

“There’s no reason for you to engage in this kind of behavior. None at all,” he said. According to an online medical resource, Mayo Clinic, alcohol is a toxin that the liver has to flush out of the body.

“But your liver may not be able to keep up if you drink too much too fast. Alcohol can kill liver cells, and lead to scarring called cirrhosis.  “Long-term heavy use of alcohol also may give you alcoholic fatty liver disease, a sign that your liver doesn’t work as well as it should.

“You can consume a fatal dose before you pass out. Even when you’re unconscious or you’ve stopped drinking, alcohol continues to be released from your stomach and intestines into your bloodstream, and the level of alcohol in your body continues to rise.”

The portal noted that the more people drink, especially in a short period, the greater the risk of alcohol poisoning.

“Unlike food, which can take hours to digest, alcohol is absorbed quickly by your body — long before most other nutrients. And it takes a lot more time for your body to get rid of the alcohol consumed. Most alcohol is processed (metabolized) by the liver,” it said.
