HFN’s sustained advocacy efforts have yielded a significant policy milestone with the successful implementation of the Executive Order on the removal of Value Added Tax (VAT) and import duties on Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs).
This breakthrough was achieved through an official approval granted by the Federal Ministry of Finance to the Nigeria Customs Service.
The implementation of this policy took effect on March 25th, 2025, and will remain enforced for a period of two years. By eliminating VAT and duties on APIs, the cost of producing essential medicines is expected to reduce significantly.
This development is a critical step toward improving medicine affordability, expanding access to quality healthcare, and advancing health equity for all Nigerians.
