20 UITHAssociation of Resident Doctors, University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, says about 20 of its members have been infected with COVID-19 in the last three weeks. President of ARD, Dr. Badmus Habeeb, revealed this on Wednesday, noting that members of the association have been battling the pandemic with the available resources at their disposal.

“About 20 of our members have become infected in the last two to three weeks. “I must reiterate that this is not the best of times for us, our families and the affected patients,” Habeed said. He noted that the discovery of COVID-19 vaccines had brought hope and relief for everyone, especially health care workers.

The ARD president, however, noted that Nigeria is a resource-poor setting where basic necessities to make the roll out of the COVID-19 vaccines easy and possible are not readily available.

“It therefore seems we may never be able to get the vaccine anytime soon,” he added.

Habeed explained that based on the available evidence, COVID-19 vaccines are effective and there is no reason why the public should not follow the guide of scientific evidence, especially with proper information and awareness.

While calling on the Federal Government to provide the necessary resources and incentives needed by the health workers across the country to battle the COVID-19 pandemic, he urged the public to adhere strictly to the laid down guidelines on the prevention of COVID-19 by NCDC.

Recall that in September, The National Association of Resident Doctors disclosed that 1,031 of its members had been exposed to COVID-19 in the course of attending to patients in health facilities across the country.

The association also said 16 of such exposed physicians died due to complications from the virus.

NARD president, Dr. Aliyu Sokomba, speaking with PUNCH HealthWise, said that as more COVID-19 cases are being reported, the total number of confirmed persons will continue to increase
