A Clinical Psychologist, Oluwakemi Akintoyese, has advised parents of Chrisland school pupils, who were alleged to have been caught engaging in sexual acts in a viral video, to ensure that they (pupils) undergo therapy and get other necessary psychological care.

In an interview with PUNCH Healthwise, the expert said the children involved have already formed opinions and ideas that only special care can change. Recall that a sex tape involving some minors from the upscale school, including a ten-year-old female student, went viral, sparking outrage and condemnation.

The alleged sexual act took place when the pupils travelled to Dubai in March to take part in the World School Games, a four-day annual competition with schools from all over the world.

The incident became public when Ubi Franklin, a talent manager, accused the school of complicity in the sexual violation involving the 10-year-old girl.

Taking to his Twitter handle @Ubifranklin1 on Sunday night, he tweeted, “Just got off the phone with a friend of mine. His 10-year-old daughter was selected to represent her school at the World School Games in Dubai,”

“His daughter was r**ped by fellow students, video tapped and posted on Instagram and the school concealed it for a month.”

Following outcry from Nigerians, the Lagos state government shutdown all the seven branches of Chrisland School indefinitely.

An investigation has also been launched by the Lagos State Police Command to unravel what actually transpired. The police said if necessary, it would seek the assistance of the International Criminal Police Organisation.

Reacting to the incident, Akintoyese blamed the alleged sexual violation on moral decadence in the society.

The psychiatrist noted that so much has gone wrong, while principles have been broken in terms of moral instructions and value system.

She said, “Now, a whole lot of children are exposed to quite a lot of things that they shouldn’t be exposed to, especially with the advent of the social media. The internet has given a leeway into all sorts of vices.

“It boils down to the discipline which is also no longer there. Children now have so much freedom and liberty. We don’t want them to suffer like we suffered, but then again, it’s also having a ripple effect.”

Akintoyese said discipline, effective communication and personal morals are things parents should pay attention to when raising their wards.

“It’s not just about focusing on their academics. Unfortunately, the society has also not helped because parents have to work and there is no proper monitoring,” she added

The psychologist stated that when children are left alone for too long, they have the tendency to try out unimaginable things.

“They are fragile and there are so many things that could have led to this unfortunate incident. They have peer pressure too. It is also possible that it was because some of their friends do it, that they also decided to try it out,” she said.

The psychologist advised parents whose children allegedly featured in the sex tape to help their wards to get care psychological help.

“I would suggest that they get help for these children as quickly as possible. It’s not something you cover, and I think that’s one thing that we need to talk about. Let them get people who can help them; therapists who can help them to begin to understand life. They need to undergo therapy,” she advised.
