Speaking with our correspondent in an interview on Tuesday, Akintade said the greatest danger people still trapped in the collapsed building face is brain damage.
“The medical implication of being entrapped is that those trapped may be suffocating. This is because they are deprived of oxygen and food as there’s nothing for them to eat. So, the consequence of this is that there will be continuous brain damage either because of hypoglycemia or hypoxia.
“There is also the possibility that they may be losing blood if they are injured. Anybody that is injured and trapped, that person may bleed out. So, those are the major things that could make someone entrapped to be in danger.
“So immediately they are rescued, those are the issues you must start addressing.
“Once they are rescued, first, if there’s any bleeding, you arrest it. Then you have to start giving them glucose and oxygen.
“You can then take them to the hospital for proper examination and treatment,” Akintade said.
