stikeWorldStage Newsonline—The aggrieved health workers under the aegis of the Nigerian union of Allied Healthcare Professionals (NUAHP) has suspended its three week long strike with members ordered to resume work on Wednesday.

However, the local strike in FMC Owerri is to continue until all the local issues and demands are addressed.

Comrade Dr. Obinna Ogbonna, National President of the Union at a press conference on Tuesday called on members across the country to return to work, saying the National Administrative council of the union on 4th of June, 2015, having assessed the impact of the strike through responses from the unit branches across the nation agreed that it was very effective nationwide and had drawn the attention of President Buhari to the pending issues in the sector that the immediate past government left unresolved

The strike commenced on 18th of May, 2015 over crisis in the health sector where medical practitioners were said to be oppressing other health professionals through the instrumentality of the Ministry of Health/Chief Medical Director who refuses to implement court judgements, collectively bargained agreements and promotions of stagnated members of our Union according to scheme of service approved by government.

Ogbonna said although, the union was yet to achieve all the demands which necessitated the strike, the national leaders decided to suspend the strike in honour of the newly elected government of President Mohammadu Buhari but gave the new government till 31st July, 2015 to resolve the crisis bedeviling the health sector.”

The National President who was flanked by the immediate past President, Dr Felix Faniran and other executive members of the union at the UCH branch saluted members of the union throughout the nation for their patience, tenacity and cooperation throughout the period of the strike.

He assures them that no one would be victimised as a result of participating in the strike action.

He also commended the resilient posture of the union at Federal Medical Centre, Owerri in the face of intimidation, blackmail, threat to life and coercion by the Federal Medical Centre management and Federal ministry of health officials, to give up their legitimate demands which they have resisted so far

NUAHP members include physiotherapists, Radiographers, Dentists, Radiologists, Medical Laboratory Scientists, Dieticians, and Pharmacists amongst others.
