The Association of Resident Doctors of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi-Araba, Lagos, last weekend, embarked on an indefinite strike action to press home their demands. According to Afolabi, their demands include, “poor working conditions currently being experienced in the hospital vis-a-vis epileptic power supply leading to cancellation of surgeries and procedures to the detriment of patients and extreme discomfort to doctors and patients during consultation. Epileptic water supply with attendant risk of infection spread in the hospital. Poor working environment in most consulting rooms. “Unavailability of medical consumables and working materials necessary for daily clinical activities. Poor state of call rooms, discriminatory taxation of our members’ non-payment of one to four months’ salaries, including December 2015 salaries, non-payment of full salary according to appropriate grade level placement as contained in the December 2013 circular referenced :HCSF/EPO/EIR/63755/T1/195.”
Other demands according to Dr Afolabi are persistent victimization and intimidation of our members, non-payment of outstanding arrears vis-à-vis i.e. relativity arrears, upgrade arrears, and training sponsorship arrears. “Absence of an efficient means of communication within the hospital to facilitate effective healthcare delivery. In conclusion, we hope that these issues are speedily resolved to enable immediate restoration of services.”
