LUTHIn a move meant to break the stalemate between the striking Nurses and the Management of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital LUTH, the Federal Ministry of Labour & Reproductivity Lagos State Office has moved in and intervened. A memo sent to Nursingworld dated 13th June and addressed to the CMD LUTH stated:

RE: Trade Dispute Between National Association Of Nigerian Nurses And Midwives And Your Management I am directed to invite your management and the above mentioned association to a meeting at the Ministries Conference Room at 11am prompt over the industrial action by the union. Please endeavour to come with all relevant documents necessary to the resolution of the issues in dispute.

Signed by Ademisi A.

It would be recalled that on the 10th of June 2016 Nurses under the employ of the lagos university teaching hospital had taken to the streets in protest on issues with the LUTH Managment. The Nurses had cited the following greviances with their management: That on the issue of outstanding 2015 promotion exercise result, the nurses noted that 71 Nurses were denied promotion from CONHESS 12 - 13 (ACNO - CNO) using BNSC as a criteria for promotion, claiming this negates the scheme of service for nurses in Nigeria. According to them, this decision is to stagnate Nurses on CONHESS 12 which negates the judgement of the National Industrial Court on non-skipping as conveyed by the circular with reference No HCSF/EPO/EIR/637551/TI/192 dated 4th November 2013

Other issues cited included the change of LUTH Nurses nomenclature: Nurses with BNSC Nursing were promoted from CONHESS 12 - 13 and designated as Assistant director in Nursing service (ADNS) instead of Chief Nursing Officer (CNO), Which is contradictory to what was done in other Federal Health Institutions in Nigeria, non-payment of newly employed Nurses salary, Lack of consumables e.g. dressing materials, lotion, gloves, syringes and needle.

Also the inadequate/obsolete equipments in the hospitals, inadequate man power, irregular water and power supply, the non-payment of teaching allowance, the poor staff welfare and non-payment of 2013, 2014, 2015 promotion arrears. During the course of the protest, Comrade Awojide, the Lagos State Chairman of the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives Lagos chapter declared that an industrial action would commence immediately in order to press home the nurses demands till the management of LUTH acceeds to their demands.
