The RRBN team, who were accompanied by policemen, arrested seven quack radiographers and sealed their centres. They also visited the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital; Osun State Specialist Hospital; Seventh Day Adventist Hospital, Ile-Ife as well as other privately-owned diagnostic centres in Ilesa. Bakare said, "We are in the state to make sure that quack radiographers stop attending to the unsuspecting people. We are doing everything to stop them because of the effect of their practice on the health of the nation.
"Quacks via their activities always expose their patients to radiation and this causes cancer and infertility. These are the results of over-exposure to ionising radiation. These are not often immediate but they come up after sometime and their victims would not know where they contracted the illnesses. "It is unfortunate that people do not ask questions before they get services.
It is our right to ask for the identities and license of those attending to us. Their certificates and licences are to be on display at the entrance of any X-ray room. "The situation in the state is precarious. We found out that 90 per cent of the people practising are not qualified to do so. Some of them are not medically qualified to have a centre. One of them has a degree in Physical Health Education. For the other suspects, their certificates are still under investigation."
Bakare explained that those arrested dispensed radiology services without licence, even as some of them had informal training. He also promised that the board would to write to the management of some of the government centres to provide them with necessary equipment. The Head, Lagos zone of the board, Mr. Chuma Unaegbunam, said the association would ensure that only qualified persons, who have equipment, practised the profession.
