Neurosurgeon, Dr Biodun Ogungbo, director of Spine Fixed in Abuja (SFIA), said, Hydrocephalus is a difficult situation to manage. Hydrocephalus is on the increase because of ignorance and poverty. There is need for advocacy and, more importantly, women who are preparing to have babies, should take folic acid. This prevents a lot of problems with the brain.
He added, Access to medical practitioners who can manage the situation is key. Paediatricians and gynaecologists should carry out proper diagnosis and then refer such patients to neurosurgeons. He said that hydrocephalus could lead to child blindness, deafness, paralysis, uncontrolled urine, stool and death if left untreated.
Also speaking, Dr Charles Ugwuanyi, a neurosurgeon at the National Hospital, Abuja, said that with the introduction of the new Medtronic neuronavigation machine, less would be spent by Nigerians on foreign medical trips.
