uch 13The Public Relations Officer of the University College Hospital, Ibadan, Mr. Toye Akinnola, says the tertiary institution’s water supply has been disrupted by the ongoing renovation work.

Akinnola said that some of the pipes carrying water into the hospital were laid since the hospital was established in 1953, and they had never been changed, adding that the pipes buried underground were being removed and replaced.

The PRO said, “I will not say there is no scarcity of water in UCH, but some people are blowing the issue out of proportion. We are carrying out massive renovation as I speak with you. All the pipes laid between 1953 and 1957 have gone bad and we are replacing them.

“The sewage system that has never been cleared is being cleared now. If we are doing all these, there is no way water supply will not be affected. Because of that, we have reduced admission to almost zero level. We only take very critical cases so that it won’t appear as if we have shut down the hospital completely. That is the situation.”

Our correspondent reports that patients and relatives of those on admission at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, are experiencing a hard time following the water scarcity in the hospital.

Our correspondent gathered on Wednesday that the water supply problem became a serious issue about five days ago.

Patients reportedly buy bags of sachet water for drinking, bathing and other purposes.

A family member of a patient, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the situation was so bad that the surgery scheduled for his relative on admission was put on hold.
