nmaThe Kwara State chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association on Wednesday advocated continuous psychiatric evaluation for all political office holders.

Such political office holders include the President, vice-president, state governors and their deputies, members of the National Assembly, members of state Houses of Assembly, political appointees, local government chairmen and other elected or appointed officials at the local government level.

The Chairman, Kwara State NMA, Dr Kunle Olawepo, also stated that it was not only imperative for all political aspirants to be subjected to a psychiatric test before they become candidates of their parties, but that the test should be regular in order to certify their continuous fitness for their positions when elected or serving to ensure continuous quality delivery of the dividends of democracy.

Olawepo said, “Everybody is expected  to have medical certification before going into any profession. Even when you have tested the person and certified that the person is okay, health is not like once you have it, you will have it forever.”

Explaining that it was not only that the responsibilities of the political office holders were stressful, Olawepo stressed that healthy people could become sick anytime hence the need for the test to be continuous.

He also said motorists should also be subjected to psychiatric test to prevent deaths on the roads while security agencies must continue to be alive to their responsibilities. Olawepo spoke during a media briefing in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, to mark the 2017 Annual General Meeting of the branch.
