Briefing the press, the President of the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital chapter of the association, Dr. Ahmed Tukur, said the decision was part of the resolutions reached by the association at its Extraordinary Executive Council meeting in Abuja on August 26.

 

Tukur lamented that the Federal Government had yet to meet the association’s demands as agreed.

 

While urging all stakeholders in the health sector to commit fully to its growth, he identified persistent salary shortfalls to resident doctors nationwide as a major grievance of the association requiring urgent resolution.

 

Other grievances mentioned are: the inclusion of resident doctors in the national salary platform, lack of funding for residency training, and the non-enrolment of the doctors pension arrangement, among others.

 

Giving the fact that the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) strike is still yet to be resolved, many will wonder how the Federal Government will handle combined massive strikes, while they dread the impact that the grounding of the two major sectors of health and education will have on the economy and the well-being of Nigerians.
