Thus diligent and excellent performers, as well as innovators were given recognition awards in various categories in an event characteristic of the preceding five editions; the occasion was equally marked by an excellent performance by the organizers. The Convention Centre of the Eko Hotel & Suites in Lagos was a convergence of eminent stakeholders made up of mainly the participating organizations and individuals from all areas of the healthcare sector including media organizations.
Featuring in the Special Awards category included media organizations who were nominated in the different sub-categories such as – Health Care Media Excellence Award – Online and Health Care Media Excellence Award – Broadcast. The other is Health Care Media Excellence Award – Print; nominees for this sub-category included –PharmaTimes, BusinessDay Media Ltd, Punch Newspaper, and Pharmanews which eventually carted home the award-winning it back to back in a consistent manner.
In a night of glitz as well as glitterati and colors, was fulfilling for the awardees in the following categories: Special Awards, Health Delivery Services, Biomedical Technology Awards, and Pharmaceutical Awards. And so it was for Emeritus Professor Oladipo Olujimi Akinkugbe, Dr. Stella Chinyelu Okoli and Prof. Eyitayo Lambo; they shone brightly, carting home the NHEA Lifetime Achievement Awards for the year 2019.
In the other categories, the Special Recognition Award was given to Dr. Mohammed Pate for providing leadership in the reduction of polio in Nigeria, and Dr. Aranmolate Ayobami who was honored for his revolutionary role in cosmetic surgery in the country. Other awardees were as follows: Access Bank Plc got the Outstanding Health Care SME-Friendly Financial Institution of the Year Award; Health Care Media Excellence Award – Online went to Nigeria Health Watch; Health Care Media Excellence Award – Broadcast was won by Nurses On Air – (Pinnacle Health Radio); while Nursing and Midwifery Excellence Service Award of the Year went to Nurse Tolu Adeleke-Aire – (Tolu the Midwife), among many others.
Dr. Wale Alabi who is the Project Coordinator for NHEA said in his remarks that the annual awards have increased the level of healthy competition thereby enabling better productivity, improvement in quality as well as competence among the various players. He said that, “…In turn, these factors usually result in reduced costs, increase innovation and patient satisfaction, adding that, “The aim of the award recognition is to continue to stimulate quality, service improvement and innovation in the Nigerian management of key health issues.”
On his part, Dr. Anthony Omolola who is the Chairman, Advisory Board for NHEA 2019 stated that With 6,000 nominations, the 2019 edition recorded about 300% increase in participation from the 2018 edition. He revealed that over 100,000 online votes were cast during the period, adding that five new categories were also introduced, specifically, three in pharmaceutical and two in the special awards categories.
The NHEA annual event is chiefly aimed at giving recognition to and identifying with the rapidly developing Healthcare sector in Nigeria; it also seeks to acknowledge and appreciate the role of technology and the ability of organizations and individuals to inspire and set new performance standards in the country and even outside the borders of Nigeria.
