Buhari OK OKResident doctors in the South-West have urged President Muhammadu Buhari and the Nigerian Governors’ Forum to prevail upon state governors to pay the salary arrears of their members in the teaching hospitals of state-owned universities.

The Deputy Leader, National Association of Resident Doctors of Nigeria, South-West caucus, Dr Taofeek Sanni, said the nations’ leaders should move swiftly between now and three weeks to avoid an industrial crisis in hospitals across the country.

Sanni said, “The issues are those of the state university teaching hospitals. Many of them across the country owe salary arrears; particularly at the Abia State University Teaching Hospital, where our members are being owed 14 months’ salary arrears.

“We also mentioned other universities in the South-West where our members are being owed a certain amount of salary arrears; many of them are also understaffed, governments are not replacing those who left; so the workload on the doctors is getting heavier every day.”

Sanni listed the affected facilities in the South-West to include Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital; Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital; LAUTECH Teaching Hospital, Osogbo; Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu; and the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja.
