Some doctors performing a surgeryAn unspecified number of doctors and dentists is billed to face a tribunal set up by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria between September 23 (today) and 27, 2019 over various professional lapses.

MDCN is the regulatory body of all medical and alternative medicine practitioners in Nigeria with the mandate to discipline any erring medical practitioner whose actions or in-actions fall short of medical professional ethics.

During the induction ceremony held in Abuja in July by MDCN for 412 medical doctors that returned to Nigeria after their training in various medical schools outside the country, Registrar of the body, Tajudeen Sanusi, said that more than 120 doctors and dentists were being investigated for professional lapses at the time while more than 60 others were facing trial at the tribunal. He noted that some of the pending cases had been concluded.

Although when our correspondent contacted him on Saturday to verify if the number of doctors and dentists on trial had changed, Sanusi said he would speak on the issue during the trial.

Giving a reason for the huge number of medical practitioners being investigated and tried during the induction, Sanusi said the accumulation was as a result of the ban placed on the council by the Federal Government, which prevented it from sitting for several years.

He said, “All these happened because the council was in abeyance for some years. When the Federal Government made a pronouncement to dissolve boards of parastatals, unfortunately, the council was included, thereby disturbing the regulatory activities of the council.

“The disciplinary organ of the MDCN is the only avenue that people who do not have money can access to get justice or redress if they felt something had gone wrong in the process of being treated.”
