The total number of coronavirus recoveries in Nigeria now exceeds 1000, The PUNCH reports. This was contained in a data released by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control on Wednesday night.
“Till date, 4971 cases have been confirmed, 1070 cases have been discharged and 164 deaths have been recorded in 34 states and the Federal Capital Territory,” the Centre stated on its website.
PSN disagrees with NAFDAC, PTF on search for local COVID-19 cure
Site AdminThe umbrella body of pharmacists in the country, the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, has disagreed with the Federal Government and the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control over the search for cures for COVID-19.
The Secretary General of the PSN, Emeka Duru, in an interview with The PUNCH on Wednesday, stated that the National Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development had several relevant drugs waiting to be developed.
Health workers in the FCT have threatened to proceed on industrial action as from June 1, over unpaid salaries, allowances, and other entitlements by the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA).
The workers comprising medical specialists/consultants, doctors in the 14 district hospitals and those in department of public health and primary healthcare development board, said the only thing that would stop the action is if the FCTA attend to their needs as quickly as possible.

Covid-19: WHO to begin drug trial in FCT, Lagos, Ogun, others-Ehanire
Site AdminMinister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire, has announced on Monday that the Federal Government is cooperating with the World Health Orgabisation, (WHO) on treatment regimen solidarity trial with the following states enrolled; Lagos, Ogun, Kaduna, Sokoto, Kano and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Ehanire stated this at a briefing by the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 in Abuja. The minister, however, did not state when the trial will begin and the modalities for it. COVID-19: Nigeria records 184 new cases, total infections now 4971
Site AdminThe Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) on Wednesday recorded 184 new cases of COVID-19 in the country, bringing the total number of infections in Nigeria to 4,871. The NCDC also said that six new patients have been confirmed dead to the virus in the country, bringing the total number of deaths to 164.
The NCDC noted that no new state had reported a case in the last 24 hours. The agency said that to date, 4,787 cases have been confirmed,
The Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19, on Thursday, said that it is not aware of the whereabouts of the Chinese doctors and health professionals who were brought to Nigeria some weeks ago to help the country in its fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.
Speaking at the daily briefing of the PTF in Abuja on Thursday, the Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire, wondered why there was so much interest in knowing the whereabouts of the Chinese health professionals and he told journalists not to ask him the question again. The World Health Organisation on Tuesday reported that COVID-19 cases in Africa increased to about 86,000 on Tuesday. WHO Regional Office for Africa in Brazzaville, Congo, gave the update on its official Twitter account, @WHOAFRO.
WHO also said Lesotho, Comoros, and Seychelles were countries currently with the lowest confirmed cases in the region. It said that Lesotho had only one confirmed case with zero death; Comoros had 11 reported cases and one death, while Seychelles recorded 11 confirmed cases with no death.

The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), on Wednesday, lamented the maltreatment of its members on essential duties by security personnel and has directed doctors to leave all official duty and close when it is exactly 4 pm daily.
The directive, according to the President of NMA, Dr Francis Faduyile, is to stop the doctors from working late and reduce the embarrassment they face in the process of carrying out their lawful duties. “That with effect from today, Wednesday, May 20th 2020, all medical and dental practitioners should henceforth work between the hours of 8.00 am and 4.00 pm, to give enough time for them to return back home,” the NMA president said.
WHO records highest single-day global increase of COVID-19 cases
Site AdminThe World Health Organization said Wednesday it had registered a new daily record number of COVID-19 cases as it quickly neared the “tragic milestone” of five million total infections. The UN agency’s chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that on Tuesday, there were “106,000 cases reported to WHO — the most in a single day since the outbreak began” in December.

The Nigerian Medical Association has suspended its “sit-at-home” in Lagos State, The suspension of the action came barely 24 hours after the association had asked its members to embark on an indefinite “sit-at-home” over alleged harassment by security agents in the state.
Lagos State has intensified home treatment for coronavirus patients with mild symptoms as positive cases continue to rise. Wednesday night, out of the 284 new cases announced by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), the state recorded 199.
Ten other states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) recorded as follows: Rivers (26); Oyo (19); eight each in FCT and Borno; Plateau (seven); Jigawa (six); Kano (five); Abia (two) and one each in Ekiti, Delta, Kwara and Taraba. The NCDC put the national tally at 6,677, discharged patients at 1840 and the recorded deaths at 200.
