Bill gates Buhari 3American billionaire, Bill Gates is reportedly willing to invest N9billion ($50m) annually on the Nigerian health sector. The Chairman, Senate Committee on Health, Senator Lanre Tejuosho made this revelation in a recent chat with Punch Newspaper.

On meeting Gates, Senator Tejuosho disclosed that he had attended a World Bank Programme in Washington DC, when he and the Health Minister, Prof. IsaacAdewole were invited for a sideline meeting which was organised by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

malaria 300x225The Zamfara Government on Tuesday said it had procured malaria drugs worth of N120 million as part of its commitments to improve healthcare delivery in the state.

UNICEF LOGO 300x225The United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) and the Canadian government in partnership with Taraba State Primary Health Care Agency yesterday commenced a free healthcare project tagged, ‘Hard To Reach.’

The project aimed at offering free medical services to children, women and the less-privileged in rural communities, with special focus on immunisation, polio, nutrition, malaria and community mobilisation on health matters was flagged off at Suriwa village, near Jalingo.

Giyan –Ndom made the call yesterday while addressing newsmen at the medical facility in Keffi, Keffi local government area of the state.

HIV Drugs 300x168The World Health Organization has congratulated Thailand as the first country in the Asia-Pacific region to eliminate mother-to-child transmission of HIV and syphilis.

It is also the first with a “large HIV epidemic” to eradicate mother-to-child transmission of the diseases. In 2014, an estimated 450,000 people were living with HIV in Thailand.

Buhari travelling e1465161097266Vice President, Commonwealth Medical Association, Dr. Osahon Enabulele Monday expressed disappointment at the news of President Muhammadu Buhari’s10-Day medical trip to London for an Ear, Nose and Throat, E.N.T, infection, saying, “it as a tragic blot on Nigeria’s collective professional and National image.”

The former President, Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, who condemned frequent medical trip by government officials, said Nigeria has suffered a great loss to medical tourism in recent past.

Primary Healthcare CentresIn line with its commitment to resuscitate 10, 000 Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) across wards in Nigeria, the federal government has urged Tertiary healthcare institutions across the nation to look more in the area of Public Private Partnership as a necessary tool for more development. 
 
Minister of state for health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire who gave this advice yesterday while commissioning projects at the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi (NOHIL) noted that the primary focus of the federal government at present is to re-habilitate PHCs, stressing that government cannot be every-where to establish everything that we need, thus the need to involve the private sector to contribute to the growth of the economy.

We have experienced hopes and hiccups but the civil society organizations have remained resolute.
 
What do we want to see happening in the health sector? It is a simple mechanism, a situation where the health sector has a quarterly accountability interactive forum that allows the ministers and all chief executives of the various health agencies to attend and give an account of their stewardship quarterly which include updates on financial releases and spending as well as services rendered and to some extent positive outcomes achieved.

The need for transfusion amongst Nigerians is high, and this is upped with casualties from bomb blasts, insurgency, communal crises and accidents, among others. However, the Nigerian government has neglected its role in ensuring blood safety in thehealth care system. 

Blood safety, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO) encompasses actions aimed at ensuring that everyone has access to blood and blood products that are as safe as possible; available at reasonable cost, adequate to meet the needs of patients, transfused only when necessary, and provided as part of a sustainable blood programme within the existing health care system.
