‘Poor oral hygiene can cause cancer’
Dr Charles Ononiwu, associate Professor and Chief Consultant Maxillofacial surgeon, says poor oral hygiene can lead to cancer in oral or facial region of the body. Ononiwu, who is the head, Department of Maxillofacial Surgery at the National Hospital, said this in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.
Oral and maxillofacial surgery specializes in surgery of the face, mouth, and jaws; it is an internationally recognized surgical specialty. He said that cancer formation was something that grows gradually and needed to be discovered on time for proper treatment. “When it comes to oral care, we know that infection generally is one of things that are responsible for cancers.
LASG seeks immediate care for emergency trauma patients
The Lagos State Government has appealed to health care providers, including public and private health facilities operating in the state, to stop rejecting gunshot victims and other trauma patients for want of a police report before commencing treatment.
The Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, in a statement released on Monday, lamented that some health facilities in the State were in the habit of rejecting or delaying care to trauma victims, which has in some cases resulted in avoidable loss of lives. Abayomi urged hospitals, health centres and clinics to offer immediate comprehensive care to gunshot victims and other trauma patients without hindrance, in line with the Federal Compulsory Treatment and Care for Victims of Gunshot Act, 2017.
Oyo acquires equipment to boost health care service
The Oyo State Government, in a bid to improve health care infrastructure, has procured a Siemens Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) 1.5 Tesla for the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital in Ogbomoso.
The Managing Director of Swiss Biostadt Limited, Dr Emma Ajayi, said the new 1.5T MRI machine would facilitate health care delivery in the country, stressing that with the facilities available, LAUTECH Teaching Hospital had emerged as the leading centre for radiology and medical imaging in Nigeria. Ajayi, in a statement issued on Monday, noted that the hospital is now poised to take health care delivery in Oyo to the frontiers of internationally acceptable and reproducible health standards.
Gombe governor signs health insurance bill, others
Governor Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State on Tuesday signed the Contributory Health Care Management Bill 2019 and three others. The others are the Gombe State Hospitals Services Management Board Bill, the Gombe State Council on Public Procurement Bill and the Public Procurement Bureau Bill.
Baby Of The Year: Minister Donates Items To 120 Babies In Abuja
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister of State, Dr Ramatu Tijjani Aliyu, on Wednesday, donated baby items and cash to 120 babies delivered in selected Primary Health Care Centres across the six Area Councils of the territory as part of activities to celebrate the New Year.
Making the donation in Chikuku Primary Health Care Centre of Kuje Area Council, the minister described the successful delivery as a bundle of joy, while praying that joy would continue to radiate in the territory in 2020 and beyond.

Federal medical centers
The Federal Government plans to establish six medical centres of excellence to stop medical tourism among Nigerians. The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Health, Senator Ibrahim Oloriegbe, disclosed this on Saturday at a town hall meeting in Ilorin where he gave account of his stewardship to constituents in Kwara Central Senatorial District.
Oloriegbe said the ninth National Assembly had mapped out strategies to discourage medical tourism abroad with the resuscitation of specialised centres in federal tertiary hospitals.
