The Chief Surveillance Officer of the state, Dr Okechukwu Ossai, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu on Wednesday that the exercise was to get the health workers prepared on the virus.

Ossai, who is also the Director of Public Health in the state, noted that the ministry was not relenting in its efforts to keep surveillance on burning health issues.

“We thank God that there is no case of Lassa fever in Enugu State, although the surveillance and monitoring department is still working hard day and night. “And now with the outlook of Zika virus; we have started a statewide sensitisation to all health workers in both public and private health institutions on signs and symptoms of the dreaded virus,’’ he said. Ossai noted that the department had now resorted to using integrated surveillance system to track Zika, Lassa fever or any other disease.

“The ministry, however, urges residents to maintain a clean environment since both Zika and Lassa fever are all environmentally-borne illnesses.
