Medical consultants suspend strike

med cons suspendsThe  Medical and Dental  Consultants Association of Nigeria has suspended its  strike   to compel the National Universities Commission to reverse its decision  to make  the acquisition of  PhD  mandatory for clinical lecturers   for  career progression  in public  universities.

The MDCAN on February 25 withdrew its services from Colleges of Medicine in public universities after the expiration of the 21-day ultimatum the doctors  issued to the NUC to withdraw its circular. The President of the association, Prof. Kenneth Ozoilo, who announced the suspension of the strike at a press conference in Jos  on Tuesday,

 said the intervention of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, and others played a major role in their decision.

He  expressed  confidence  that the suspension of the strike   would  allow for the resolution of the matter and other sundry issues affecting clinical lecturers.

Ozoilo  said, “Following the intervention of the Speaker, House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, through the Chairman, House Committee on Health and members the House Committees on Health and Tertiary Education, a mediation meeting was held on  March  3 and 4.

“Following the positive resolutions arrived at these meetings, an emergency National Executive Council meeting of  the MDCAN was held at the Tropicana Hotel, Abuja.

“The meeting deliberated extensively on the outcome of the mediation meeting and resolved by a majority decision to suspend the withdrawal of service by the  MDCAN from universities.”
