doctorsAs part of efforts to strengthen  health care delivery in Abia State, the state government has  warned medical doctors in her employ who  allegedly abandon their statutory   duties for private practice that those caught would be sanctioned .

The commissioner for Health,  D r  John Ahukanna said the ministry was disturbed  by the attitude of  some doctors, who  instead of working conscientiously in the hospitals they are posted to, spend more time in their private clinics.

He  appealed for a change of  attitude to work  and  more  commitment to their statutory duties warning that if there was  no appreciable change   sanctions would be the  appropriate  option.

Speaking to journalists in Umuahia,  the  commissioner disclosed that the ministry has given the newly constituted     Hospitals Management Board  directive to constitute a monitoring team to supervise the activities of the doctors  and other health workers in government health institutions and report  regularly to him for appropriate action. He also frowned   at the over bloated work force at the state Hospital Management Board which he said is  not justifiable in terms of  productivity adding that government “cannot continue to waste resources on redundant workers.”

The commissioner   added that the state government  has stepped up measures to make the hospitals  and other health facilities  in the state functional and give   optimal services to the people. He said the government  has embarked on the construction four residential  quarters for doctors  with utilities  like bore holes,  and electricity  adding  that the quarters are located at Okeikpe,  Arochukwu, Ikwuano,    and Obingwa local government areas.

Dr Ahukanna said that it has  become   necessary to rekindle the confidence of the Abia residents in the   government hospitals through the provision of    enough  qualified medical staff and equipment. He added that Governor  Okezie   Ikpeazu has approved the employment of specialized health workers  including Doctors, Pharmacists nurses laboratory Scientists to ensure that the  health care delivery in the state was standardized,.
