Ambode AkinwunmiLagos State Government has sanctioned some health workers in the state’s primary health centres for selling drugs, facilities and monetising other free services meant for the public.

This development unfolded recently as the Lagos State Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode directed that all the general hospitals and primary health care centres, PHCs across the state be renovated due to their deplorable condition.

Speaking at the flagoff the Eko Free Health Mission organised by Eko Club International and AMBSAM Memorial Foundation in conjunction with the Lagos State Government, the state’s Commissioner for Health, Dr. Jide Idris, who disclosed this, said some of the health workers have been sanctioned while investigations were ongoing.

Idris, who also commissioned health centre donated by the club, lamented that there were lot of services and facilities provided by the government free of charge but secretly and unlawfully commercialised by the unscrupulous workers. He said: “Reports have come to us that a lot of our workers in PHCs are selling commodities that are provided by the government free of charge. That is wrong! I want to sound a note of warning for those of our staff who are penetrating these activities to desist.

The Commissioner also said that the renovation of the hospital ordered by Ambode would take place in batches. He said that the government would soon role out plans to sensitise the public on the health insurance scheme which, according to him, will be implemented soon.
