Health Minister Calls For Investment In Tropical Diseases Treatment

isaac AdewoleThe minister of health, Professor Isaac Adewole, has called on stakeholders in the health sector to scale up the control and elimination of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) in Africa.

Adewole made the plea at the ‎ one billion celebration of the treatment for blindness and other neglected tropical diseases organized by the Sightsavers Nigeria. The minister who was represented by Dr Evelyn Ngige said many are still exposed to the diseases in Africa. Adewole implored the non-governmental development organisations to continue on the path of excellence in the ontrol and eradication of NTDs globally.

Sightsaver Nigeria, country director, Sunday Isiaku, explained that Nigeria has about 25 per cent infected people in Africa and is on endemic list. Isiaku, said they are partnering with the Federal Government and the state government in providing logistics support and technical support to ensure that people who need treatment are taken care off.

The senior health advisor, Department for International Department (DFID) and deputy team leader from the United Kingdom, Dr Christopher Lewis, said the United Kingdom government will invest the sum of £360million to protect over 200 million people suffering from Tricomia and other neglected tropical disease in Nigeria and Africa. He added that the fight against the diseases is a collective efforts.
