Stephen-Adeyemo said it was necessary to educate children about the sensitive parts of their bodies in order not to fall prey to child molesters, who might want to take advantage of their innocence.
He said, “We are in perilous times as we often hear of different cases of child abuse, especially when it comes to sex. Anybody can be an abuser. So it is very important for parents and guardians to make their children and wards aware of the sensitive parts of their bodies and the dangers that lie in people touching them.
“These molesters often take advantage of the naivety of children to have their way with them. Parents should also cultivate friendships with their children. If your child is afraid of you, that kid will not open up to you when certain things are going on in their lives. We invited both medical and legal experts to speak with children and teenagers at EVR and it was really an illuminating session.
“On the issue of drug abuse, we taught attendees at the programmes that there are fulfilling and positive ways they can keep themselves occupied. In the world now, Information and Communication Technology is the order of the day and there are many opportunities, which young people can take advantage of to excel. After all, people like Facebook founder, Mark Zuckerberg, started from somewhere. When kids are productively engaged, they wouldn’t have time to try out illicit drugs.”
With the theme, ‘The Synergy, where patriotism meets excellence’ the retreat also featured team building, citizenship class, finishing session, exposé on the national anthem, sessions on academic excellence, challenge on excellence contests, and other activities.
