O7Y0icuV 400x400The planned upgrade of the 22 teaching hospitals in Nigeria which is expected to commence before the end of this year will save the country about $1bn (N360bn) annually.

The acting Head, Media and Publicity, Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission, Patrick Ederaro, who said this, noted that the upgrade was needed as the current condition of the hospitals are not acceptable. He told our correspondent on the telephone on Sunday that the idea behind the project was to address the gaps in the teaching hospitals towards providing access to quality healthcare delivery across Nigeria.

He said, “Successful implementation of this project would ensure improvement and sustainability of high quality clinical and diagnostics services, improvement in learning and research facilities across all the 22 teaching hospitals. “It would allow the government to use saved funds and additional revenue to strengthen primary medical care across the country and reduction in medical tourism.

“It has been estimated that Nigerians spend about $1bn on medical treatment outside the shores of Nigeria annually. The Teaching Hospitals PPP/Concession project would ensure that this trend stops. “It would also reduce incessant strikes by the medical and paramedical staff of these hospitals due to obsolete equipment,” he added.
